FRENCH & HUMANITIES 295
We highly encourage the Switzerland Faculty-in-Residence (and, if applicable, the partner of the FiR) to take advantage of two important educational opportunities:
1. Join a French class. Participating in a French course has many benefits for the FiR:
Learning the language of the host country is a basic way to show respect. Rather than assuming others will speak English, we strive to be culturally sensitive and use the local language.
On a practical level, learning French makes it easier to get around town and facilitate daily transactions.
Learning French demonstrates to students what it means to be a life-long learner, to take a course for the sake of learning, and to strive for excellence apart from a grade.
2. Join the HUM 295 class ("Enriching the International Experience")
This is a 1-hour per week class that focuses on Swiss history and culture, and is a great introduction to our region! It also include tours to local museums, art exhibits, and places of historical importance.
Please note:
FiR do not need to officially sign up or audit a French class or HUM 295; they simply need to email the Executive Assistant to the Director, Sophie Peeters (sophie.peeters@pepperdine.edu), to let her know that they are interested in attending and in which course they would like enroll.
We request that FiR commit to a class, agreeing to be present every session, be an engaged learner, and complete all exercises expected of the students.
If multiple sections of the same class exist, the Executive Assistant will place the FiR in whatever class is best for the program (provided it does not conflict with their teaching schedule).
